Gillette Stadium: Home of the New England Patriots
Located in Foxborough (Massachusetts), at 28 miles of southwest of downtown Boston and 20 miles northeast of downtown Providence (Rhode Island), Gillette Stadium was opened in 2002 (September, 9). It was designed by HOK sport (now Populous, an American global architectural firm specializing in the design of sports facilities, arenas and convention centers) and was announced as a 68.000 seat stadium at a cost of $325 million, with the entire cost privately funded. The stadium owner is the same of the New England Patriots: Kraft Group, holding company founded by American businessman Robert Kraft.
Since 2015, Gillette Stadium capacity is 65.000 seat for American Football and 20.000 seat for Soccer.
The stadium was originally know as CMGI Field before the naming rights were bought by Gillette company after the dot-com bust (an economic bubble and a period of excessive speculation that occurred in the USA from 1995 to 2000). In September 2010, the Gillette company and New England Patriots announced that their partnership, which includes naming rights to the stadium, will extend through the 2031 season.
Gillette Stadium has replaced the old Foxboro Stadium, when New England Patriots played all of their home games from the 1971 to 2001 NFL seasons. Foxboro Stadium was closed in January 2002 and was demolished in spring of the same year.
